About this work

Overview

Claudio Coello’s 1651 oil painting portrays Saint Anthony of Padua in a contemplative pose. The saint, dressed in a brown habit, holds a book and engages with a small winged cherub. Set against a dark backdrop illuminated from above, the composition emphasizes a quiet, devotional atmosphere.

Subject & Meaning

The work presents Saint Anthony, a revered Franciscan preacher, with his characteristic book, symbolizing his theological teachings. The cherub, clothed in purple and crowned with a halo, serves as a celestial interlocutor, highlighting the saint’s spiritual insight and the dialogue between the earthly and divine realms.

Technique & Style

Coello employs pronounced chiaroscuro, using strong contrasts of light and shadow to model the figures and suggest depth. The tactile rendering of the fabric, the delicate wings of the cherub, and the subtle glint on the book demonstrate the Baroque interest in realism and dramatic illumination.

History & Provenance

Created in the mid‑17th century, the painting reflects Coello’s role as a court artist for Charles II of Spain. After remaining in private or ecclesiastical collections, it entered the Museo del Prado in Madrid, where it is currently displayed as part of the museum’s Spanish Baroque holdings.

Context

Coello, the son of Portuguese sculptor Faustino Coello, was among the last prominent Spanish painters of the 1600s. His oeuvre includes numerous commissions for Madrid’s churches and public edifices, with his most celebrated piece located in the sacristy of El Escorial. This painting exemplifies the cross‑influence of Italian early Baroque aesthetics within Spanish religious art.
