About this work

Overview

The drawing, titled “The Adoration of the Shepherds,” is executed on brown paper using pen and brown ink, supplemented with black chalk, a brown wash, and touches of white. The composition presents a modest group of figures gathered around an infant in a manger, with a sparse background suggesting trees and a few animals.

Subject & Meaning

The scene captures the biblical moment when shepherds come to honor the newborn Christ. The figures are rendered in swift, gestural lines, some standing, others kneeling, one clutching a hat, conveying a sense of immediacy and reverence without elaborate detail.

Technique & Style

The artist builds form through thin, layered strokes, employing cross‑hatching to model shadows and give the figures a subtle three‑dimensional presence. Squared lines indicate a transfer method, while the limited palette of brown, black, and white creates a muted tonal range that emphasizes contour over color.

History & Provenance

The work entered the market in 1885 when it was acquired from the London dealer Robert Jackson as part of a collection of forty drawings, for a total price of £5 17s 6d. Its subsequent ownership history remains undocumented beyond this initial purchase.
