About this work

Overview

Dirck Barendsz’s *Meal of the Amsterdam Militia* (1566) is an oil painting that records a gathering of civic guardsmen in mid‑sixteenth‑century Amsterdam. Executed during the Northern Renaissance, the work now belongs to the Rijksmuseum’s collection and offers a rare visual record of a militia banquet.

Subject & Meaning

The canvas portrays a group of men from the Schutterij, the city’s volunteer guard, seated around a long table. A solitary man and woman appear among the guards, suggesting a social or ceremonial aspect to the meal. The composition emphasizes communal identity and the civic responsibilities of the militia.

Technique & Style

Barendsz employs a restrained chiaroscuro, allowing the faces of the figures to emerge from a darkened background. The participants wear dark garments with ruffled collars and occasional hats, while the table is set with plates, cups, bread and fruit. The subdued lighting creates a focused, solemn atmosphere.

History & Provenance

Born in Amsterdam in 1534, Barendsz trained in Italy under Titian before returning to the Netherlands, where he worked within the Northern Renaissance tradition. After its creation, the painting entered various private collections before being acquired by the Rijksmuseum, where it remains on display.

Context

Militia group portraits were a popular genre in Dutch civic art, reflecting the importance of local defense forces in the political life of the Dutch Republic. Barendsz’s work predates the later, more elaborate schutterstukken of the seventeenth century, offering insight into early visual conventions of the genre.
