Henriques employs chiaroscuro to model the figures, using light and shadow to give them three‑dimensional presence against a modestly detailed landscape. The natural setting—rocky cliffs, scattered trees and a soft blue sky—provides a serene backdrop that enhances the intimate encounter.

Trained in Bruges before moving to Portugal, Henriques worked there in the early sixteenth century. The painting entered the National Museum of Ancient Art’s holdings at an unspecified date, where it remains on display as an example of early Portuguese Renaissance art.

The work reflects the diffusion of Northern Renaissance visual vocabulary into Iberian art, combining detailed observation of nature with devotional subject matter.
