About this work

Overview

Giuseppe Bonito, a Neapolitan painter active in the mid‑18th century, executed this oil painting in 1759. The work belongs to the collection of the Royal Palace of Caserta and presents the two young princes of the House of Bourbon, Filippo Pasquale and Carlo Antonio, positioned before a detailed plan of a fortification.

Subject & Meaning

The composition shows the princes as children, each dressed in elaborate court costume—one in a pink coat edged with gold, the other in a blue coat trimmed with silver. Their white hair, sashes, and medals emphasize their royal status, while the inclusion of the fortress plan alludes to their future military or administrative responsibilities.

Technique & Style

Executed in the Rococo idiom, the painting combines delicate brushwork with a luminous palette. Bonito renders the fabrics with fine attention to embroidery and sheen, while the dark green curtain behind the figures creates a contrasting backdrop that enhances the sense of depth and the refined atmosphere typical of his courtly genre scenes.

History & Provenance

Created shortly after the Bourbon restoration in Naples, the work entered the royal holdings of the Caserta palace, where it has remained in situ. Its presence in the palace collection reflects the dynastic propaganda of the period, celebrating the heirs of the new Bourbon line.

Context

The painting emerges from a period when Neapolitan art was increasingly influenced by French Rococo, yet retained a local emphasis on ceremonial portraiture. Bonito, known primarily for genre scenes, applied his skill in rendering everyday elegance to a formal portrait that also serves a documentary function, recording the princes alongside a strategic architectural drawing.
