Courtois employs vigorous brushwork and a vivid palette to convey motion. The contrast between the dark background and the illuminated figures heightens the sense of depth, while the rendering of the horses’ mane and the riders’ attire reflects a naturalistic attention to detail characteristic of the period’s battle painters.

Although Courtois spent most of his career in Rome and Florence, this 1705 canvas eventually entered the holdings of Denmark’s national gallery, the Statens Museum for Kunst, where it remains on view. Its acquisition marks the museum’s interest in European battle scenes from the early eighteenth century.

Courtois was regarded as the pre‑eminent battle painter of his generation, merging the dynamism of Baroque composition with a realistic portrayal of military action. The painting aligns with his broader oeuvre, which often depicted cavalry engagements with a focus on the physicality of both horse and rider.
