About this work

Overview

Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles and represents David’s final mythological couple scene, intended as a companion piece to his earlier Love and Psyche.

Created in 1818, this oil painting by Jacques‑Louis David portrays the parting of Telemachus and Eucharis, figures drawn from François Fénelon’s 1699 novel Les Aventures de Télémaque, itself a reworking of Homer’s Odyssey. The work now belongs to the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles and represents David’s final mythological couple scene, intended as a companion piece to his earlier Love and Psyche.

Subject & Meaning

The composition captures a tender farewell: the young hero Telemachus, clad in a blue robe edged with gold, embraces Eucharis, who wears a pink dress with a green sash. Their heads are inclined toward each other, suggesting both affection and imminent separation, a moment echoed in the literary source where the two characters part after a shared adventure.

Technique & Style

David employs a stark chiaroscuro, setting the figures against a deep, almost black background that heightens the luminous hues of their garments. The brushwork is precise, especially in the rendering of the spear in Telemachus’s right hand and the delicate folds of the clothing, while the white dog at the edge adds a subtle narrative detail.

History & Provenance

The painting was executed while David was in exile in Brussels after the fall of Napoleon. It entered the collection of Count von Schönborn‑Wiesentheid before eventually being acquired by the Getty Museum, where it remains on display.

Context

Fénelon’s novel, a didactic sequel to the Odyssey, was popular in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, providing a moral framework for the young Telemachus. David’s choice of this subject reflects the period’s fascination with classical literature and the artist’s own interest in heroic themes during his later years.
