The palette is restrained, focusing attention on the illuminated face and the gleam of the sword, while the darker background recedes, reinforcing the central figure’s prominence.

Initially produced during Leys’s mature period, the portrait reflects his transition from the Romantic historicism that characterized his early career toward a more realistic approach that later defined Belgian Realism. Leys’s reputation extended across Europe, influencing peers beyond his native Belgium. The painting entered the Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp, where it remains on display.
