About this work

Created in 1654, this oil on canvas portrays a modest kitchen interior populated by three figures engaged in everyday tasks. The composition captures a moment of domestic routine, with a woman in a red dress seated on a stool, a child crouching near a basket of fruit, and an older woman arranging plates on a table. The setting is cramped, filled with barrels, shelves and a lantern that casts a warm, uneven glow across the scene.

Subject & Meaning

The work reflects the Dutch Golden Age’s interest in genre painting, emphasizing ordinary life rather than heroic or mythological themes. By focusing on a humble kitchen, the artist highlights the value placed on household labor and family interaction, inviting viewers to consider the quiet dignity of daily chores and the social hierarchy suggested by the differing ages and roles of the figures.

Technique & Style

A pronounced chiaroscuro effect defines the composition, with a single light source illuminating the foreground while casting the surrounding space into deep shadow. This contrast creates a sense of intimacy and three‑dimensionality, emphasizing textures such as the sheen of the lantern, the roughness of wooden barrels, and the softness of fabric. The brushwork is detailed yet restrained, reinforcing the realistic portrayal of the interior.

History & Provenance

Attributed to Jan Gillisz. van Vliet, a Dutch draftsman and printmaker who studied under Rembrandt, the painting’s authorship remains uncertain, as no signed works survive. Nonetheless, stylistic parallels link it to van Vliet’s oeuvre. The canvas entered the collection of the State Hermitage Museum, where it is currently displayed as part of the museum’s representation of 17th‑century Dutch genre painting.
