About this work

Overview

Jan Olis, a Dutch painter active during the mid‑17th century, executed the oil work *Gentlemen playing backgammon* in 1637. The composition belongs to the genre‑painting tradition that flourished in the Dutch Golden Age, depicting everyday life with careful observation. The piece is presently part of the Fitzwilliam Museum’s collection.

Subject & Meaning

The scene gathers several men around a low table, absorbed in a game of backgammon. Attired in contemporary 17th‑century dress, one figure is seated while the others stand, some holding cups and others leaning toward the board. The relaxed posture and shared focus suggest a moment of leisure and social interaction among peers.

Technique & Style

Olis employs chiaroscuro to model the figures, allowing a warm light from the table to illuminate faces and hands against a darker interior. This contrast creates a sense of depth and draws attention to the central activity. The brushwork renders textures of fabric and wood with subtle detail, enhancing the intimate atmosphere.

History & Provenance

Born in Gorinchem, Olis worked mainly in Dordrecht, where he was recorded as a wine merchant and a guild teacher between 1632 and 1643. The painting’s provenance traces to its acquisition by the Fitzwilliam Museum, where it remains on display as an example of Dutch genre painting.

Context

During the 1630s Dutch society valued domestic and recreational scenes as reflections of moral order and communal harmony. Games such as backgammon were popular pastimes, often symbolising chance and strategy, themes frequently explored by contemporary artists to comment on human behavior.
