The painting depicts an interior kitchen scene in which a woman is threading a chicken onto a spit while a seated man observes, holding a jug. On the left side of the table lie additional fowl, and on the floor a varied assortment of vegetables—cabbage, cauliflower, melons, cucumbers, gourds, onions—and fruit are scattered. Near the man's feet a plate with pieces of meat rests, and in the lower right corner fish, a copper kettle and a pot are visible, accompanied by a jug and a glass jar placed on a barrel.
Subject & Meaning
The work offers a detailed view of everyday domestic activity in a 17th‑century Dutch household, emphasizing the preparation of food and the abundance of produce. The juxtaposition of the active woman and the passive male figure suggests a division of labor, while the careful arrangement of items conveys the routine yet essential nature of kitchen work during the period.
Technique & Style
The artist renders the scene with meticulous attention to texture, capturing the reflective quality of copper, the sheen of the jug, and the subtle play of light across the tiled floor. Fine brushwork delineates the feathers of the birds and the surfaces of the vegetables, while a restrained palette of earthy tones reinforces the realism of the interior.
History & Provenance
The painting originates from the Dutch Golden Age, a time when genre scenes of domestic life were popular among patrons. Its provenance traces back to collections of Dutch art, and it currently resides in the Rijksmuseum, where it contributes to the museum’s representation of everyday life in 1600s Holland.
