About this work
Overview
Created in 1505, this oil painting by Jan Provoost combines the biblical crucifixion with scenes from the legend of Saint Catherine of Alexandria. Executed on a single panel, the work is presently displayed in the Royal Museum of Fine Arts in Antwerp. It presents a densely populated composition that juxtaposes violent conflict with a moment of devout supplication.
Subject & Meaning
At the centre of the scene a woman dressed in red kneels in prayer, clutching a small globe that alludes to Catherine’s reputation as a learned martyr. Her upward gaze contrasts with the surrounding soldiers, whose armor and weapons suggest the turmoil of the crucifixion narrative. The juxtaposition underscores the saint’s steadfast faith amid worldly chaos.

The palette balances bright accents of green, red, and gold against more subdued tones, creating depth while maintaining a clear visual hierarchy.
