Created in 1655 by the Dutch painter Johannes Ling‑Lingelbach, Sea Skirmish is an oil on canvas that belongs to the marine tradition of the Dutch Golden Age. The composition captures a violent naval clash on open water, with vessels colliding, sails billowing, and turbulent waves surrounding the combatants. The work is part of the permanent collection of the Statens Museum for Kunst in Copenhagen.
Subject & Meaning
The scene portrays a chaotic sea battle where ships grind against one another, smoke fills the sky, and crews engage in close‑quarter fighting with swords and firearms. Some vessels appear to be sinking while others attempt to flee, emphasizing the precariousness of life at sea and the ferocity of 17th‑century naval warfare.
Technique & Style
Lingelbach employs strong chiaroscuro, contrasting deep shadows with bright highlights to accentuate the drama of the conflict. The brushwork conveys the frothy, restless sea, while the rendering of faces—ranging from terror to resolve—adds psychological depth. The palette of muted earth tones punctuated by flashes of white sailcloth reinforces the turbulent atmosphere.
History & Provenance
After its completion, the painting entered private collections before being acquired by the Statens Museum for Kunst, Denmark’s national gallery. Its presence there reflects the museum’s interest in Dutch marine painting and provides a reference point for the influence of the Bamboccianti circle, of which Lingelbach was a member during his time in Rome.
