About this work

Overview

Created circa 1642, *Nuori tyttö ja parittaja* is an oil painting by Dutch artist Salomon de Koninck, active during the mid‑seventeenth‑century Dutch Golden Age. The work presents a domestic interior in which a young woman and an older attendant share a quiet moment, rendered with the subdued realism characteristic of the period.

Subject & Meaning

The composition shows a youthful female figure seated and partially concealed by a red drapery, her back turned toward the viewer, while an older woman in dark attire observes from behind. Objects such as a pearl necklace and a small box on the table suggest themes of modesty, adornment, and perhaps the transactional nature of the encounter, inviting contemplation of social roles.

Technique & Style

Koninck employs a restrained chiaroscuro, allowing a soft, diffused light to illuminate the figures against a deep, shadowed backdrop. Warm reds and muted earth tones dominate, emphasizing the tactile quality of the fabrics. The handling of skin tones and the delicate rendering of the pearl convey a careful attention to materiality, while the overall composition remains intimate and balanced.

History & Provenance

Born in Amsterdam in 1609, Salomon de Koninck trained with artists such as Pieter Lastman and was linked to Rembrandt’s circle. He joined the Sint Lucasgilde in 1630 and remained active until his death and burial in Amsterdam in 1656. The painting’s later ownership records are sparse, but it has been documented in Dutch collections since the eighteenth century.
