About this work

Overview

Created around 1335, this tempera panel by the anonymous Master of the Palazzo Venezia Madonna presents the Virgin enthroned with the infant Christ, accompanied by four canonized figures. The composition is framed by an ornamental arch and set against a luminous gold ground, now part of the Gemäldegalerie in Berlin.

Subject & Meaning

At the centre, Mary is shown seated in a deep blue mantle, cradling the Christ Child, a conventional symbol of divine motherhood. The four surrounding saints, each marked by golden halos, form a tight triangular grouping that reinforces the centrality of the holy duo and reflects medieval devotional hierarchies.

Technique & Style

The work employs the International Gothic palette of rich blues, reds, and extensive gold leaf, creating a radiant, otherworldly atmosphere. Figures are rendered with delicate linear outlines and stylised drapery, while the arch-like frame and patterned background echo the ornamental aesthetics of early 14th‑century Italian panel painting.

History & Provenance

Originally painted for a private chapel or ecclesiastical setting, the panel entered the collection of the Gemäldegalerie, Berlin, in the early 20th century. Its attribution to the Master of the Palazzo Venezia Madonna stems from stylistic parallels with other works linked to that workshop in Rome.

Context

The depiction follows a long-standing iconographic tradition of the Virgin and Child flanked by saints, a motif common in medieval devotional art. The arrangement of the saints in a triangular formation reflects contemporary theological emphasis on the intercessory role of saints surrounding the divine pair.
