About this work

Overview

Niccolò di Pietro Gerini, an Italian painter active in the late 1300s, executed the tempera work *Crucifixion with the Virgin and St John* in 1396. The panel presents the central Christian episode of the crucifixion, surrounded by the Virgin Mary and Saint John, set against a luminous gold field. The composition is now part of the State Hermitage Museum’s holdings.

Subject & Meaning

The scene shows Christ nailed to the cross, his body rendered in a slender, almost ethereal nude, crowned with a halo.

The scene shows Christ nailed to the cross, his body rendered in a slender, almost ethereal nude, crowned with a halo. Above the cross, two angels bear cloths to catch the blood, while the inscription “I.N.R.I.” appears on a red plaque. Below, Mary in a dark robe with a red lining and John in pink‑gray garments look upward, their halos marking their sanctity and emphasizing the sorrowful devotion of the moment.

Technique & Style

Gerini employed tempera on a gold background, a common medium for devotional panels of the period. The figures are arranged with a formal rigidity, characteristic of the Gothic tradition, and the colors are applied in flat, luminous layers that enhance the solemn atmosphere. The use of gold and the stylized halos contribute to a sense of the divine, while the composition’s vertical axis draws the viewer’s eye toward the crucified Christ.

History & Provenance

Created in 1396, the painting reflects Gerini’s activity in Florence, Pisa, and Prato during the late Gothic era. After circulating in private collections, it entered the State Hermitage Museum, where it remains on display. Its presence in the museum underscores the institution’s commitment to representing Italian medieval art alongside its broader European holdings.
