About this work

Overview

Norma G. Morgan, an American printmaker active in the mid‑twentieth century, produced an engraving titled Untitled in 1956. The work is part of the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art and exemplifies Morgan’s focus on landscape subjects rendered through meticulous line work.

Subject & Meaning

The image presents a sharply defined mountain that ascends directly from the lower edge of the plate. Rough rock faces dominate the composition, punctuated by thin strips of grass and isolated trees clinging to the slope, while a pale, almost vacant sky occupies the upper space, suggesting a stark, elemental environment.

Technique & Style

Morgan employed the traditional engraving process, incising fine, parallel lines into a metal plate to create tonal variation. By varying line density she achieved deep shadows and illuminated planes, giving the stone a palpable solidity. The intricate network of tiny marks produces a textured surface that conveys depth without the use of color.

History & Provenance

Created during Morgan’s period of artistic activity in the 1950s, the print reflects the influence of her time spent in Great Britain, where she honed her etching and engraving skills. After its completion, the work entered the collection of MoMA, joining a broader assemblage of Morgan’s prints held in major institutions worldwide.
