About this work

Overview

Created in 1596, this oil on canvas presents a dramatic rendition of Saint Sebastian, rendered in the heightened mannerist idiom of late‑Renaissance Venice. The composition centers on the martyr suspended from a tree, his body illuminated against a rugged, mountainous backdrop that recedes to a small settlement.

Subject & Meaning

The work portrays the Christian saint bound to a trunk, his limbs contorted as arrows pierce his flesh—a visual reference to his legendary endurance of persecution. The juxtaposition of his vulnerable, exposed form with the stark natural environment underscores themes of suffering, faith, and the triumph of spiritual resolve.

Technique & Style

Employing pronounced chiaroscuro, the painter contrasts bright, localized illumination on the saint’s torso with deep shadows that envelop the surrounding foliage and landscape. This manipulation of light heightens the emotional intensity and gives the figure a three‑dimensional presence, while the elongated proportions and elegant poses reflect the mannerist preference for artificial elegance over naturalism.

History & Provenance

The canvas was executed by Iacopo Negretti, known as Palma il Giovane, who succeeded Tintoretto as Venice’s foremost painter at the turn of the 17th century. After serving patrons in Venice and beyond, including commissions for Emperor Rudolph II, the painting entered the collection of the State Hermitage Museum, where it remains on public display.
