About this work

Overview

Created in 1625 by the Flemish painter Peter Paul Rubens, this oil on canvas presents an equestrian portrait of George Villiers, the first Duke of Buckingham. The work belongs to the Baroque period and is currently part of the Kimbell Art Museum’s collection.

Subject & Meaning

The central figure is the Duke, mounted on a brown horse, clad in armor and a vivid red cape, his right arm raised in a commanding gesture. Above him, a winged child—identified as a Cupid figure—draws a bow, while below a partially draped female figure looks upward, suggesting an allegorical narrative that intertwines martial prowess with classical symbolism.

Technique & Style

Rubens employs the dynamic composition typical of Baroque painting, using vigorous brushwork and a rich palette to convey motion and drama. The contrast between the bright red cape, the dark mane of the horse, and the luminous flesh tones of the figures heightens the sense of immediacy and theatricality.

Context

The portrait was produced during Buckingham’s tenure as a leading courtier and favorite of King James I and Charles I of England. Rubens, also a diplomat, often painted high‑profile patrons, and this work reflects the political and cultural ties between the English court and the Flemish artistic world of the early seventeenth century.

History & Provenance

After remaining in private hands for several centuries, the painting entered the collection of the Kimbell Art Museum, where it is displayed as part of the museum’s European Baroque holdings.
