After a career largely spent in Italy, Subleyras returned to France, where he completed this piece for a private devotional setting. The painting entered the Los Angeles County Museum of Art’s collection in the late 20th century, becoming part of the museum’s European holdings and remaining on view as an example of mid‑18th‑century religious art.
