Inscription and Two Seals is a portfolio created by Rai Sanyō, a Japanese scholar and artist, in 1829. Rai Sanyō, also known as Rai Noboru, was a prominent figure in the later Edo period, distinguished by his work in Confucian philosophy, history, art, and poetry.

History & Provenance

Rai Sanyō was born in Aki Province in 1780 and died in Kyoto in 1832. The portfolio is now part of The Cleveland Museum of Art's collection.

Rai San'yō (Japanese: 頼 山陽; 21 January 1780, Aki Province – 16 October 1832, Kyoto) was a Japanese Confucianist philosopher, historian, artist and poet of the later Edo period. His true name was Rai Noboru.
