Homer Dictating his Verses is an oil-on-canvas painting created by Rembrandt in 1663. The work is signed and dated by the artist.
History & Provenance
The painting was commissioned by Antonio Ruffo, a Sicilian nobleman, as one of three works featuring ancient figures. It remained in the Ruffo family's collection until around 1750. Later, it was acquired by Abraham Bredius in London in 1894 and bequeathed to the Mauritshuis in 1946.
Context
The painting is part of a series of three works by Rembrandt, including Aristotle with a Bust of Homer (1653) and a lost Alexander the Great (1663), all commissioned by Ruffo.
