Axentowicz employed a restrained palette, using muted earth tones for the background that allow the dark clothing and luminous pearls to stand out. The oil medium is applied with smooth, controlled brushwork, rendering the fabric’s texture and the sitter’s skin with subtle gradations of light, characteristic of his refined, academic approach to portraiture.

The portrait was created while Axentowicz served as rector of the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków, a period marked by his prolific output of individual likenesses. After its completion, the painting entered the collection of the National Museum in Kraków, where it remains on display as a representative example of his portrait work.

Axentowicz is best known for his depictions of Hutsul life in the Carpathians as well as his society portraits. This work illustrates his ability to shift from ethnographic scenes to intimate, formal portraiture, aligning with the broader European tradition of documenting the social elite through a polished, academic lens.
