The Horse Cart (Le Chariot)

Allemand combined etching, drypoint, and a monotype‑like wiping process to achieve a range of line qualities and tonal effects. Fine etched lines delineate architectural elements such as the stone wall, whereas the drypoint burr creates softer, velvety edges for the trees and water. The monotype wiping adds a subtle, uneven wash that softens the sky and surface ripples, producing a contrast between crisp detail and a more atmospheric, dreamlike ambience.

Created in 1849, The Horse Cart entered the collection of the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., where it remains on view. The print reflects Allemand’s interest in landscape subjects during a period when French printmakers were exploring hybrid techniques to expand the expressive possibilities of the medium.
