An official in the Sultan's palace

An official in the Sultan's palace is a watercolor work on paper by the Orientalist artist Anonymous Greek artist. It dates from 1809 and is held in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum.
About this work
Overview
The work is a watercolour depicting an official within the Sultan’s palace, part of a larger series commissioned by British diplomat Stratford Canning, later Viscount Stratford de Redcliffe (1786‑1880). Canning, serving as first secretary to Robert Adair during the 1808 mission to Istanbul, ordered a comprehensive visual record of Ottoman institutions, architecture and customs.
Subject & Meaning
The image presents a court official in a ceremonial setting, illustrating the hierarchical structure of the Ottoman administration. By portraying a figure of authority inside the palace, the drawing conveys both the exotic appeal of the empire to a European audience and Canning’s intent to document the inner workings of a foreign court.
Technique & Style
Executed in watercolour, the piece merges the rich, saturated pigments typical of Ottoman miniature traditions with European conventions of linear perspective and spatial depth. The anonymous artist, thought by Turkish scholars to be linked to Konstantin Kapidagli’s workshop, combines dense bodycolour washes with precise architectural rendering, creating a hybrid visual language.
History & Provenance
The series remained in Canning’s family until his daughter Charlotte sold it to the Victoria and Albert Museum in 1895. Earlier, the young architect Charles Cockerell visited Istanbul in 1810, met the same Greek artist, and produced copies of his architectural studies, which are now held by the British Museum.
Context
Commissioned during a period of intensified diplomatic contact between Britain and the Ottoman Empire, the drawings served both as a record for the diplomat’s reports and as material for European audiences fascinated by Oriental subjects. The collaboration reflects the cross‑cultural exchanges that characterized early‑19th‑century diplomatic missions.
