About this work

Overview

Executed during the Northern Renaissance, the work forms part of a larger series of Habsburg portraits now conserved in Vienna’s Kunsthistorisches Museum.

Created circa 1550 by the Flemish court painter Anton Boys, this oil portrait presents the figure of Philip I of Castile, known as Philip the Handsome. Executed during the Northern Renaissance, the work forms part of a larger series of Habsburg portraits now conserved in Vienna’s Kunsthistorisches Museum. The composition emphasizes the sitter’s regal bearing through formal dress and symbolic objects.

Subject & Meaning

The portrait shows Philip I in a solemn pose, his gaze directed outward. He wears a black, jeweled hat topped with a gold crown, a white and black doublet, and a brown fur mantle, all signifiers of his royal status. In his right hand he grasps a gold scepter, reinforcing his authority and the dynastic significance of the Habsburg lineage to which he belonged.

Technique & Style

Boys employs a restrained palette of deep blacks, muted whites, and earthy browns, allowing the gold accents of the crown and scepter to stand out. The handling of light creates subtle chiaroscuro, modeling the facial features and the folds of the fur coat with a soft gradation of tone. The overall effect reflects the Northern Renaissance’s attention to detail and texture while retaining a dignified, almost austere atmosphere.

History & Provenance

Anton Boys, who travelled through Italy and Spain before joining the Habsburg courts, painted this portrait while serving Archduke Ferdinand II of Austria. The work entered the imperial collection and eventually became part of the Kunsthistorisches Museum’s holdings, where it remains displayed among other portraits of the Habsburg family, illustrating the dynasty’s visual self‑presentation in the sixteenth century.
