"Vrouw Verneem-al" and "Hans de Pluym-strijcker"

About this work
Overview
Around 1564 the Dutch printmaker Johannes van Doetecum the Elder created a paired etching titled *Vrouw Verneem-al* and *Hans de Pluym‑strijcker*. The work consists of two oval portrait plates placed side by side, each rendered in fine, incised lines that capture distinct facial expressions.
Subject & Meaning
The left figure is shown with a dark cap and a high‑collared shirt, mouth open as if speaking, while the right figure wears a flat cap, curly hair and a composed, forward‑looking gaze. The contrast between an animated, verbal pose and a calm, introspective one suggests a study of differing character types.
Technique & Style
Van Doetecum employed the etching process, wherein acid bites the metal plate after the artist scratches the design. Ink settles into these incised lines, producing a textured surface when pressed onto paper. The delicate line work and subtle shading give the portraits a three‑dimensional quality despite their small scale.
History & Provenance
Johannes van Doetecum the Elder was active in the mid‑to‑late sixteenth century, initially working in Deventer before moving to Haarlem in 1578. He is known for reproducing genre scenes of Pieter Bruegel the Elder and for cartographic prints of Dutch cities. This pair belongs to a series of reproductive engravings he produced in collaboration with his brother Lucas.
Context
The prints are part of a broader tradition of Dutch portraiture that emphasized individual character traits through expressive detail. By pairing a speaking figure with a stoic counterpart, van Doetecum reflects contemporary interests in moral typologies and the visual exploration of human temperament.
