Lemoyne employs a strong chiaroscuro scheme, using deep reds, browns and grays to envelop the interior while a single shaft of light highlights the woman’s dress and the afflicted man’s face. The contrast of illumination and shadow intensifies the emotional tension and directs the viewer’s eye toward the focal point of suffering.

Lemoyne, appointed Premier peintre du Roi under Louis XV and professor at the Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture, produced this sketch as part of his preparatory work for larger commissions. Though specific ownership records are scarce, the piece reflects his pedagogical role, later influencing pupils such as Charles‑Joseph Natoire and François Boucher.

The work emerges from a period when French court painters were integrating Baroque drama with the lighter, decorative tendencies of Rococo. Lemoyne’s choice of a biblical theme aligns with the Académie’s emphasis on history painting, while his use of theatrical lighting anticipates the emotive approaches later adopted by his students.
