About this work

Overview

Created in 1537 by Portuguese painter Garcia Fernandes, this work illustrates the biblical episode of Christ’s resurrection. Executed during the Mannerist phase of the Renaissance, the painting now belongs to the National Museum of Ancient Art’s collection.

Subject & Meaning

The central figure is the risen Christ, garbed in a vivid red robe, his right arm raised in a gesture of triumph and his left hand gripping a staff. He stands upon a stone platform beside a column, while fallen figures lie in the foreground and other onlookers appear in the distance, suggesting the discovery of the empty tomb.

Technique & Style

Fernandes employs a balanced palette of warm reds against cooler, muted background tones, enhancing the focal figure through contrast. The use of chiaroscuro models the forms, giving volume to the figures and depth to the landscape of trees and distant buildings.

History & Provenance

Trained in Lisbon under court artist Jorge Afonso, Fernandes worked for monastic patrons in Coimbra before receiving commissions for altarpieces in Lamego and Évora. The painting eventually entered the National Museum of Ancient Art, where it remains on display.
