About this work
Overview
Created around 1500, this oil painting titled *Nativity* is attributed to the anonymous hand known as Monogrammist AH. It is part of the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts in Lyon. The work presents a conventional Christian scene of the birth of Jesus, arranged within a modest architectural setting and illuminated by a celestial star.
Subject & Meaning
At the centre of the composition the Virgin Mary kneels beside the infant Christ, who rests in a simple manger. Surrounding them are shepherds, a group of angels, and the traditional stable animals—a donkey and an ox—emphasising the humble circumstances of the event. The star above the stable serves as a visual reference to the biblical annunciation of the newborn savior.
Technique & Style
Executed in oil on panel, the painting employs a careful gradation of light and shadow to model the figures, a technique known as chiaroscuro. The artist renders textures such as fur, fabric and stone with fine brushwork, creating a sense of spatial depth that draws the viewer into the intimate setting. The overall palette is warm, reinforcing the gentle glow of the star’s illumination.
History & Provenance
The work entered the Museum of Fine Arts of Lyon in the early twentieth century, though its earlier ownership remains undocumented. Its attribution to Monogrammist AH, a notname applied to several early sixteenth‑century works of uncertain authorship, is based on stylistic parallels with other paintings bearing the same monogram.
