About this work

Overview

Created in 1501, *Holy Trinity* is an oil painting by the Dutch artist Jan Cornelisz. Vermeyen. Executed during the early Northern Renaissance, the work belongs to the religious genre and is presently displayed in Madrid’s Museo del Prado. Its composition centers on a celestial scene in which a bearded figure in red supports another figure on a luminous orb, surrounded by a host of angels and cherubs.

Subject & Meaning

The central figures represent the Christian Trinity, with the red-robed elder embodying the Father and the suffering figure symbolizing the Son, both positioned on a divine sphere. The surrounding angels hold instruments of the Passion—crosses, crowns of thorns—emphasizing Christ’s sacrifice. The overall tone conveys solemnity and compassion, inviting contemplation of divine suffering and redemption.

Technique & Style

Vermeyen employs oil on panel to achieve a rich, layered surface, allowing subtle transitions of light across the figures. The painting displays a nascent use of chiaroscuro, modeling forms through contrast between illuminated flesh and deepened shadows. The figures are rendered with the detailed realism characteristic of Northern Renaissance art, while the airy sky and ethereal angels reflect a lingering Gothic sensibility.

History & Provenance

Jan Cornelisz. Vermeyen, later court painter to the Habsburg governors of the Netherlands, produced this work early in his career, before his service to Archduchess Margaret of Austria and Mary of Hungary. *Holy Trinity* entered the Spanish royal collection in the 17th century and was transferred to the Museo del Prado, where it has remained on public display.
