About this work

Overview

Jan Cornelisz. Vermeyen, a Dutch painter active in the early 1500s, produced the oil work known as *Portrait of a Woman* around 1539. The canvas presents a solitary female sitter whose identity remains unknown. The piece is part of the Ashmolean Museum’s collection and exemplifies the portraiture that characterized Vermeyen’s career during the period later identified as the Dutch Golden Age.

Subject & Meaning

The figure is shown in modest attire: a white head covering, a dark gown trimmed with a white ruffled collar and cuffs, and a thin chain at her throat. Her hands are gently clasped before her, and her gaze is directed downward, lending a contemplative, restrained air. The composition suggests a private, perhaps devotional, portrayal rather than a public display of status.

Technique & Style
This contrast creates a three‑dimensional presence and reinforces the sober mood.

Vermeyen employs chiaroscuro to model the sitter’s form, allowing light to illuminate the face, collar and the reddish‑brown sleeves while the surrounding space recedes into shadow. This contrast creates a three‑dimensional presence and reinforces the sober mood. The brushwork is smooth in the flesh tones yet retains a slightly textured handling in the fabric, reflecting the artist’s blend of realism and courtly elegance.

History & Provenance

Throughout his career Vermeyen served the Habsburg governors of the Netherlands, including Archduchess Margaret of Austria and Mary of Hungary, though this particular portrait does not correspond to any known court figure. The painting entered the Ashmolean Museum’s holdings in the 20th century, where it remains on display as a representative example of early Netherlandish portraiture.
