About this work

Overview

Jan van Dornicke, a South Netherlandish painter active in the early sixteenth century, completed the oil‑on‑panel work *Triptych with the Epiphany* in 1540. The three‑panel composition is framed in gilded wood and is presently housed in the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya. Its subject is the biblical episode of the Magi’s adoration of the infant Jesus.

Subject & Meaning

Together the scenes illustrate the Epiphany narrative, emphasizing the recognition of Christ’s divinity by the three wise men.

The central panel presents a woman holding the Christ Child while a kneeling figure offers a gift on a table, accompanied by two standing men in richly coloured garments. The flanking panels depict additional members of the visiting entourage: a man in a red hat presenting a golden orb, and a figure in white robes with a red hat holding a staff. Together the scenes illustrate the Epiphany narrative, emphasizing the recognition of Christ’s divinity by the three wise men.

Technique & Style

Executed in oil paint, the triptych displays the elongated figures and elaborate, somewhat artificial arrangements typical of Antwerp Mannerism. The artist employs vivid colours—deep reds, golds and greens—and detailed surface treatment to convey the sumptuous textiles and jewelry of the participants, while the gilded frames reinforce the work’s devotional purpose.

History & Provenance

Born around 1470 in Doornik (present‑day Tournai), van Dornicke worked in Antwerp between roughly 1509 and 1525 before producing this later work. The painting entered the collection of the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya, where it remains on display as part of the museum’s early Netherlandish holdings.

Context

The Epiphany theme was a popular subject for devotional art in the Low Countries, allowing patrons to display both piety and wealth. Van Dornicke’s treatment reflects the transitional period between late Gothic traditions and the emerging Renaissance sensibility in the region, combining narrative clarity with ornamental richness.
