About this work

Overview

Created in 1794, this oil portrait presents Stanisław August Poniatowski, the last king of Poland. The work is attributed to Johann Baptist von Lampi the Elder, an Austrian‑Italian painter known for his courtly portraits. Currently displayed in the State Hermitage Museum, the painting exemplifies the refined elegance associated with late Rococo portraiture.

Subject & Meaning

The sitter is shown seated, clad in a richly dyed blue coat edged with gold and adorned with several medals, signifying his royal status and honors. His powdered white wig and composed expression convey a dignified authority, while the restrained pose and sober demeanor suggest a balance between personal gravitas and the ceremonial role of a monarch.

Technique & Style
The delicate modeling of the face captures subtle light on the cheekbones and eyes, contrasting with the dark, neutral background that isolates the figure.

Lampi employs a smooth, almost silken handling of the fabric, rendering the coat’s folds and gold trim with meticulous brushwork. The delicate modeling of the face captures subtle light on the cheekbones and eyes, contrasting with the dark, neutral background that isolates the figure. The palette of deep blues, golds, and muted flesh tones reflects the late Rococo’s shift toward restrained elegance.

History & Provenance

After completing the portrait, Lampi relocated to the Russian Empire following the third partition of Poland, where he entered the service of Tsar Paul I. The painting entered the Imperial collection and, after the 1917 revolution, became part of the State Hermitage Museum’s holdings, where it remains accessible to the public.

Context

The portrait was produced during a period of political upheaval for Poland, shortly before the nation’s final partition. Lampi’s commission likely served both as a personal commemoration for the king and as a diplomatic statement, illustrating the monarch’s prestige to foreign courts, particularly the Russian imperial audience that later acquired the work.
