About this work

Overview

Created in 1690, *La Purísima* is an oil painting by the Spanish artist José García Hidalgo, often referred to as El Castellano. Executed during the early Baroque period, the work now belongs to the collection of the Museo del Prado. It presents a devotional image of the Virgin Mary rendered with the dramatic lighting and compositional balance characteristic of its era.

Subject & Meaning

The composition centers on the Virgin standing upon a crescent moon, her white habit and blue mantle framing outstretched hands that gesture toward the viewer. Her calm, downward gaze conveys a sense of contemplation, while surrounding cherubs, animated and playful, introduce a lively counterpoint. Floral motifs and foliage in the backdrop enhance the scene’s reverential yet graceful atmosphere.

Technique & Style

Hidalgo employs chiaroscuro to model the figures, allowing light to fall on the Virgin’s form and recede into a warm, golden background that subtly textures the space. The contrast of illuminated drapery against deeper shadows creates depth, while the delicate handling of the cherubs and botanical details demonstrates a refined brushwork typical of early Baroque sensibilities.

History & Provenance

Born in Villena in 1646, García Hidalgo spent much of his career in Italy before returning to Spain, where he documented aspects of his life in written records. *La Purísima* entered the Prado’s holdings as part of the museum’s effort to assemble representative works of Spanish Baroque painting, where it remains on display for public viewing.
