About this work

Overview

Manuel Salvador Carmona’s 1761 print presents a portrait of the French painter François Boucher. Executed as a combined etching and engraving on laid paper, the image captures Boucher from the waist upward, set against a dark, mottled background. The work exemplifies the 18th‑century practice of reproductive engraving, which disseminated likenesses of notable cultural figures throughout Europe.

Subject & Meaning

The portrait depicts Boucher in a dark jacket trimmed with lace cuffs and a ruffled collar, his right hand holding a pencil while his left arm rests on a ledge. The inclusion of the drawing instrument underscores his identity as a practicing artist, while the subdued palette and restrained pose convey a dignified, contemplative presence.

Technique & Style

Carmona employed both etching and engraving to achieve fine line work and tonal variation. The use of chiaroscuro—contrasting light and shadow—creates depth, giving the figure a three‑dimensional quality against the muted background. The laid paper surface contributes a textured finish characteristic of prints from this period.

History & Provenance

Born in 1734 in Nava del Barco, Spain, Manuel Salvador Carmona worked as an engraver, designer, and illustrator, following the artistic path of his brothers José and Juan Antonio. The 1761 portrait was produced within his prolific output of reproductive prints, which were circulated among collectors and institutions across Europe.

Context

Reproductive engraving served as a visual conduit for sharing the images of prominent artists before the advent of photography. Carmona’s portrait of Boucher aligns with this tradition, offering contemporary audiences a standardized representation of the French painter and reinforcing his reputation within the broader Enlightenment art world.
