About this work
Overview
Manuel Salvador Carmona’s 1761 engraving presents a likeness of the French painter François Boucher. Executed in black‑and‑white, the image captures Boucher with curly hair, a dark jacket, a white lace collar, and a pen in his hand, set against an oval frame that includes a table bearing a palette and other artistic tools.
Subject & Meaning
The portrait emphasizes Boucher’s identity as a painter, foregrounding his tools of the trade. By depicting the artist holding a pen and surrounded by a palette, the image underscores his creative profession and the status of the painter in eighteenth‑century French culture.
Technique & Style
Carmona employed fine line engraving to render intricate textures in the clothing, hair, and surrounding objects. The delicate hatching conveys the softness of the lace collar and the sheen of the dark jacket, while the overall composition reflects the meticulous approach characteristic of reproductive prints of the period.
History & Provenance
Manuel Salvador Carmona, a Spanish engraver from a family of artists, produced the print during a time when reproductions circulated portraits of notable figures across Europe. The engraving entered the collection of the Cleveland Museum of Art, where it remains catalogued as part of the museum’s holdings.
Context
The work belongs to a broader European tradition of printmaking that disseminated images of cultural elites beyond national borders. In the mid‑eighteenth century, such reproductive prints served both as documentation of prominent individuals and as a means of sharing artistic styles across the continent.
