Stothard employs a palette of vivid hues and assertive brushwork to convey drama. The foreground figure, clad in a short tunic, hangs the shield whose surface bears linear ornamentation, while a second figure in a longer robe holds a slender staff. A dark, indistinct backdrop suggests a cavernous setting, heightening the sense of tension.

Created in the early nineteenth century by the British painter, illustrator and engraver Thomas Stothard, the canvas later entered the holdings of the Victoria and Albert Museum. Stothard’s artistic lineage continued through his son, Robert T. Stothard, who is noted for depicting Queen Victoria’s accession proclamation in 1837.

The work aligns with the neoclassical revival that swept Europe at the turn of the 19th century, when artists turned to antiquity for subject matter and moral exempla. Stothard’s choice of a mythic episode underscores the era’s educational aim to model virtue through classical exemplars, while his dynamic rendering anticipates later Romantic sensibilities.
