About this work
Overview
Created in 1544, this copperplate engraving titled *Flora* depicts a reclining female figure rendered in delicate line work. The image presents a partially draped woman whose pose and surroundings are rendered with minimal background, focusing attention on the figure’s form and the subtle interaction with a small plant.
Subject & Meaning
The composition portrays a mythological personification of Flora, the Roman goddess of flowers, suggested by the figure’s outstretched hand toward a sprig. The languid posture and the interplay of cloth and skin convey a sense of quiet intimacy, aligning with Renaissance interests in classical allegory and the sensual representation of nature.
Technique & Style
Vico employs fine, closely spaced lines to model the folds of the translucent drapery, creating a tactile sense of softness.
Vico employs fine, closely spaced lines to model the folds of the translucent drapery, creating a tactile sense of softness. Gradual cross‑hatching produces tonal variation, especially on the shoulder where light subtly defines the musculature. The sparse background, suggested by faint linear clouds, reinforces the figure’s prominence and reflects the decorative grotesque aesthetic popular in mid‑16th‑century Italian prints.
History & Provenance
The engraving was produced by Enea Vico, a Parma‑born engraver active in the mid‑1500s, known for works commissioned by elite patrons such as Cosimo I de’ Medici and Alfonso II d’Este. Vico’s career centered on decorative and grotesque motifs drawn from antiquarian sources. He continued working in Ferrara until his death there in 1567, leaving a body of prints that illustrate the period’s fusion of classical themes and ornamental design.
