A Rufai dervish swallowing a red-hot skewer

A Rufai dervish swallowing a red-hot skewer is a watercolor work on paper by the Orientalist artist Anonymous Greek artist. It dates from 1809 and is held in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum.
About this work
Overview
The watercolor depicts a Rufai dervish in the act of swallowing a red‑hot skewer, a ritual endurance performance associated with the Sufi order. The work belongs to a larger series of Ottoman scenes commissioned by the British diplomat Stratford Canning during his early 19th‑century posting in Istanbul.
Subject & Meaning
Rufai dervishes, distinct from the more widely known Mevlevi whirling dervishes, were celebrated by Western travelers for their dramatic feats of stamina. After prolonged chanting of divine names, they would demonstrate physical resilience by ingesting heated metal, a practice meant to illustrate spiritual transcendence and divine protection.
Technique & Style
The artist blends Ottoman water‑based pigments with European conventions of perspective, producing a densely colored, luminous surface. The handling of washes and bodycolour reflects local workshop practices, while the composition and spatial arrangement follow Western representational norms, creating a hybrid visual language.
History & Provenance
Commissioned by Stratford Canning, who arrived in Istanbul in 1808 as first secretary to Robert Adair, the series was executed by an unnamed Turkish painter, likely linked to the studio of Konstantin Kapidagli. Canning’s interest in Ottoman customs led him to employ a local artist to document the sights he encountered, both official and informal.
Context
The early 1800s saw increased diplomatic and cultural exchange between Britain and the Ottoman Empire. Canning’s collection of watercolours served both as a personal record and as a visual resource for European audiences eager to understand Ottoman religious practices and urban life.
