About this work
Overview
Created circa 1750, this oil portrait presents Ludwika Honorata Lubomirska, the spouse of the Kiev voivode. Executed by Augustyn Mirys, a painter of Polish, Scottish, and French heritage who worked in the Polish‑Lithuanian Commonwealth, the work now belongs to the National Museum in Warsaw.
Subject & Meaning
The sitter is shown with light, loosely curled hair, a calm expression, and a modestly adorned attire. A pale blue gown, embroidered with gold motifs, is complemented by a red rose at the chest and sleeves of red and cream, suggesting both elegance and the refined taste of an 18th‑century aristocratic lady.
Technique & Style
Mirys employs a soft, diffused light that isolates the face and hands from a darkened backdrop, a chiaroscuro effect typical of Rococo portraiture. Fine brushwork renders the gold swirls and floral patterns on the dress with particular precision, while the overall palette remains delicate and restrained.
History & Provenance
After training in Rome, Mirys served several high‑ranking families before entering the employ of Jan Klemens Branicki in the early 1750s. The portrait, likely commissioned during this period, entered the National Museum in Warsaw’s collection, where it remains on display.
