About this work
Overview
Sebald Beham’s *The Agony in the Garden* is a woodcut printed in 1522. Executed in black ink on paper, the image portrays a solitary, cloaked figure kneeling in a dense, shadowy forest, with a second figure standing behind in a gesture of prayer. The composition relies on stark line work and the grainy texture of the wood block to convey a sense of tension and immediacy.
Subject & Meaning
The scene interprets the biblical episode of Christ’s prayer in Gethsemane, though the figures are rendered without explicit identifiers. The kneeling figure’s bowed head and the companion’s raised hands suggest contemplation and supplication, while the surrounding trees, rendered as jagged silhouettes, amplify the atmosphere of isolation and looming distress.
Technique & Style
Beham employed the traditional woodcut method, carving the design into a plank of wood and printing it with a single black ink. The work exemplifies the fine, linear detail characteristic of the “Little Masters” and shows the influence of Albrecht Dürer’s precise engraving style, despite the medium’s coarser, rough-edged finish.
History & Provenance
Created while Beham was active in Nuremberg, the print belongs to his prolific output of roughly 1,500 woodcuts, many of which served as illustrations for contemporary books. The artist later relocated to Frankfurt, but this particular piece remains documented as part of his early Nuremberg period.
Context
The early sixteenth century saw a surge in small-scale, highly detailed prints that could be widely disseminated. Beham’s work fits within this trend, offering a portable, affordable image that could accompany devotional texts. The emphasis on intricate line work and narrative clarity reflects the broader Northern Renaissance interest in merging technical skill with religious storytelling.
