About this work

Overview

Created circa 1556, *Solicitudo Rustica* is a black‑and‑white print made by the Dutch engraver‑cartographer Johannes van Doetecum the Elder. Executed with a combination of etching and engraving on laid paper, the work presents an expansive rural landscape populated with shepherds, livestock, villages, and distant mountains, rendered in intricate linear detail.

Subject & Meaning

The image portrays a bucolic panorama in which shepherds guide flocks across rolling hills, rivers wind through cultivated fields, and modest settlements cluster along the waterway. Human activity is suggested by tiny figures on footpaths and ships navigating the river, emphasizing the interdependence of agriculture, trade, and daily life in a 16th‑century countryside.

Technique & Style
Doetecum employed both etching, which allows for fluid, spontaneous lines, and engraving, which produces precise, controlled strokes.

Doetecum employed both etching, which allows for fluid, spontaneous lines, and engraving, which produces precise, controlled strokes. The juxtaposition of these methods yields a richly textured surface where fine hatching defines atmospheric depth, while bold incisions delineate architectural forms and terrain. The composition reflects the detailed, narrative style typical of Northern Renaissance prints.

History & Provenance

Johannes van Doetecum the Elder worked in Deventer before moving to Haarlem in 1578, and he is known for reproducing genre scenes after Pieter Bruegel the Elder. *Solicitudo Rustica* belongs to this series of collaborative prints that disseminated Bruegel’s compositions. The artist’s workshop was a family enterprise; his sons Johannes II, Peter and Baptista, as well as his brother Lucas, continued the printmaking tradition.

Context

The print emerges from a period when Dutch printmakers increasingly documented rural life and topography for a growing market of collectors and travelers. By translating Bruegel’s painted scenes into reproducible prints, Doetecum helped spread visual narratives of the Low Countries’ agrarian landscape across Europe.
