About this work

Overview

Created in 1610, this oil painting by El Greco depicts Saint James the Great and is presently housed in Madrid’s Museo del Prado. The work forms part of a larger group produced for the parish church of Almadrones, reflecting the artist’s practice of reworking apostolic figures originally intended for Toledo Cathedral.

Subject & Meaning

The figure is presented as a bearded pilgrim in a loose, light‑coloured robe, his expression solemn and introspective. One hand rests open on his chest, suggesting a gesture of devotion, while the other hangs slightly away, adding a sense of quiet contemplation to the saint’s portrayal.

Technique & Style

El Greco employs pronounced chiaroscuro, setting the saint’s face against a dark background that heightens the contrast of light and shadow. Thick, textured brushstrokes render the folds of the robe, while the dramatic illumination emphasizes the deep shadows beneath the eyes and jaw, creating a striking three‑dimensional effect.

History & Provenance

The painting was originally part of a series commissioned for Almadrones’ parish church, echoing a set of apostle images made for Toledo Cathedral. In the 20th century, physician‑scholar Gregorio Marañón argued that El Greco may have used patients from the Hospital del Nuncio as models for such works, a theory that has influenced subsequent scholarship.

Context

El Greco’s late‑period works often revisited religious subjects with heightened emotional intensity. This depiction of Saint James aligns with his broader interest in spiritual fervor, while the reuse of compositional motifs across different ecclesiastical commissions illustrates the artist’s adaptive approach to patron demands.
