About this work

Overview

Francisco de Goya’s oil sketch titled *El albañil borracho* dates from the period 1786‑1787. Executed as a preparatory study for a tapestry design, the work depicts three laborers on stone steps, one seated, one leaning with a child, and a third standing with a broad grin. The figures are rendered in loose brushwork, set against a muted wall with a distant window and faint ship.

Subject & Meaning

The composition presents a group of rough‑shod masons, one apparently inebriated, engaged in a moment of informal camaraderie. The inclusion of a child suggests domestic ties, while the jovial expression contrasts with the hard‑wearing attire, hinting at Goya’s interest in the everyday lives of workers and the social conditions of his time.

Technique & Style

Goya employs a rapid, sketch‑like application of oil, allowing visible, energetic strokes to define forms. Light falls unevenly across the faces, creating a modest chiaroscuro that emphasizes texture and volume. The palette is subdued, with earthy tones and a hazy background that recedes, focusing attention on the figures’ gestures and expressions.

History & Provenance
Originally part of Goya’s fifth series of tapestry cartoons, the sketch was sold with other preparatory works for the Infantas’ bedroom to the Dukes of Osuna.

Originally part of Goya’s fifth series of tapestry cartoons, the sketch was sold with other preparatory works for the Infantas’ bedroom to the Dukes of Osuna. After the Osuna estate was liquidated in 1896, the piece entered the collection of Pedro Fernández Durán and Bernaldo de Quirós, who bequeathed it to the Museo del Prado, where it was catalogued as P027820 in 1942 and displayed in room 94 on the second floor.

Context

The work reflects the late‑18th‑century reformist climate championed by figures such as Jovellanos, who advocated for improved conditions for laborers and peasants. Goya’s depiction of mason life aligns with this intellectual current, offering a visual commentary on the dignity and hardships of manual work during Spain’s Enlightenment era.
