About this work

Overview

The print depicts Christ astride a white horse, a central image within a bound collection of twenty‑three engravings that illustrate the biblical narrative of the Apocalypse from the Book of Revelation. Produced by French printmaker Jean Duvet in the mid‑16th century, the volume is one of only seven complete sets known to survive, representing the artist’s most extensive and celebrated undertaking.

Subject & Meaning

The central figure of Christ on a white horse symbolizes the victorious rider of the Apocalypse, a motif drawn directly from Revelation’s depiction of the final battle between divine and earthly forces. Surrounding vignettes portray the surrounding chaos and divine judgment, reinforcing the theological themes of triumph, judgment, and the ultimate restoration promised in the biblical text.

Technique & Style
Duvet employed copper engraving, a labor‑intensive process that allowed for fine line work and intricate detail.

Duvet employed copper engraving, a labor‑intensive process that allowed for fine line work and intricate detail. While his figures show the solid modeling typical of Italian High Renaissance prints, especially those of Marcantonio Raimondi, Duvet’s composition is densely packed, favoring ornamental surface patterns over conventional spatial logic. This idiosyncratic approach creates a highly artificial, almost tapestry‑like visual effect.

History & Provenance

Created over several years, the Apocalypse series occupied Duvet’s artistic focus for a considerable period, marking the pinnacle of his printmaking career. Though Duvet worked primarily in the provincial town of Langres, his exposure to Italian print circulation informed his style. The museum’s volume, part of a rare complete set, reflects the limited survival of such comprehensive collections from the period.
