Johann Baptist von Lampi the Elder, born in 1751 in the Austrian‑Italian border region, painted the work before relocating to the Russian Empire under the patronage of Tsar Paul I. After changing hands over the centuries, the portrait entered the collection of Warsaw’s National Museum, where it remains on display.

The painting belongs to the Biedermeier period, a time when middle‑class values and private life were emphasized in visual art. Lampi, known for both historical scenes and portraiture, adapted this sensibility, producing works that combined refined technique with a focus on personal character rather than grand narrative.
