Landscape in the Roman Campagna

Dujardin employs a restrained chiaroscuro, using light to delineate the figures against a relatively flat background. The subtle contrast between illuminated forms and shadowed terrain gives the scene depth without disrupting its calm atmosphere. His brushwork renders the terrain and foliage with a delicate, almost lyrical quality characteristic of his Italianate landscapes.

The work entered the collection of the Royal Museum of Fine Arts in Antwerp, where it remains on display. Its acquisition reflects the museum’s interest in representing the Dutch Golden Age, particularly artists who incorporated Italian scenery into their oeuvre.

During two extended stays in Italy, Dujardin developed a reputation for small, intimate landscapes that blended Dutch genre sensibilities with Italian light and topography.
