About this work

Overview

Created in 1764, this print depicts a rural woman accompanied by two children as they walk along a simple, rocky path. Rendered on blue paper, the image combines dark etched lines with white highlights, producing a restrained, cool tonal effect typical of mid‑eighteenth‑century Italian prints.

Subject & Meaning

The composition centers on a peasant mother, her head wrapped in a scarf, holding a walking stick while a smaller child clutches a dark coat and hood. A second child follows, suggesting a modest family unit engaged in everyday travel, reflecting the artist’s interest in genre scenes that portray the simple lives of the countryside.

Technique & Style

Londonio employed traditional etching, incising the design into a metal plate and then printing it onto blue paper. White pigment was applied to selected areas, heightening the contrast and giving the figures a subtle illumination against the darker background. The clear, linear drawing and limited palette are characteristic of the period’s printmaking conventions.

History & Provenance

The work originates from Francesco Londonio, a Milanese painter and engraver trained under Ferdinando Porta, Giovanni Battista Sassi, and the engraver Benigno Bossi. After studies in Rome and Naples, Londonio returned to Milan, where he produced a series of rustic genre images for affluent Northern Italian patrons, among which this etching is a representative example.

Context

During the late Baroque and early Rococo, Italian artists often catered to elite tastes for idealized rural life. Londonio’s focus on peasants and pastoral settings aligned with contemporary market demand, offering viewers a romanticized glimpse of agrarian labor and family bonds.
