About this work
Overview
Pavel Fedotov’s oil painting titled Major’s Marriage Proposal was executed in 1848. Measuring roughly 58 by 75 centimetres, the work is part of the State Tretyakov Gallery’s collection (inventory number 5210). It depicts a scene of matrimonial negotiation involving a military officer, rendered in Fedotov’s characteristic narrative style.
Subject & Meaning
The canvas illustrates a formal matchmaking encounter, often interpreted as a commentary on social customs and the pressures of marriage within the Russian middle class of the mid‑nineteenth century. Critics note the realistic portrayal of the participants, which elevates the work beyond a simple genre scene to a study of personal and societal expectations.
Technique & Style
Fedotov employed a tight, detailed brushwork typical of his genre paintings, combining clear delineation of figures with a modest palette. The composition balances interior space and figure placement, allowing the viewer to read the interaction while maintaining a sense of immediacy and narrative clarity.
History & Provenance
The painting debuted at the Academy of Arts exhibition in the autumn of 1849 under the title Correction of Circumstances, or Matchmaking, alongside two earlier works by the artist. Its reception was extraordinary; the Academy awarded Fedotov the title of Academician based on this piece, and it entered the Tretyakov collection where it remains today.
Context
Created during a period when Russian genre painting was gaining prominence, the work reflects Fedotov’s interest in everyday life and moral themes. It stands alongside his other socially observant canvases such as The Fresh Cavalier (1846) and The Discerning Bride (1847), forming a cohesive commentary on contemporary Russian society.
Legacy
Art historians have highlighted the painting as a pivotal example of early‑nineteenth‑century Russian art, praising its truthful characterisation and the depth of its social critique. A later variant, produced between 1850 and 1852, is held by the State Russian Museum in St. Petersburg, underscoring the work’s lasting influence within Fedotov’s oeuvre.
